Title: Reign of Mist
Author: Helen Scheuerer
Genre: YA / Fantasy
Series: The Oremere Chronicles
Synopsis: The realm’s darkest secret is out.
The cruelty of the capital and the power-hungry King Arden have scattered Bleak and her companions across the continents.
On the run in a foreign land, Bleak finds herself tied to some unexpected strangers. When the answers she yearns for are finally within reach, she must face the hard truths of her past, and take her fate into her own hands before it’s too late.
Meanwhile, secrets and magic unravel as a dark power corrupts the realm. Bleak’s friends are forced to decide where their loyalties lie, and who, if anyone, they can trust.
But one thing is certain: war is coming, and they must all be ready when it does.
Intriguing and action-packed, Reign of Mist is the second installment in Helen Scheuerer’s epic YA fantasy series, The Oremere Chronicles. (taken from Goodreads)
Uhhhhh, second book syndrome? I don’t know her.
Even though I generally enjoyed reading Heart of Mist, I admittedly had no idea what to expect going into this one. After all, middle books are notorious for being slow and unable to live up to the first or the finale. But let me tell you, Reign of Mist absolutely blows the first one out of the water. Intense and fast-paced, the book is jam-packed with non-stop action and awesome characters that kept me eager to turn the page.
In my review for the Heart of Mist, I mentioned that the best part of the book was the fact that Bleak had an alcohol problem (yeah, alcoholism isn’t normally a thing you’d describe as the “best” of something but hey, it’s a rare thing to find in YA). I’m glad to say that Bleak’s struggle with alcohol is still very much present and still very much a problem she has to work hard to overcome. I found Bleak to be absolutely admirable; her character growth in this is phenomenal and I loved how strong she became by the end of the book.
Another thing I loved is the friendships. SO. MANY. AMAZING.FRIENDSHIPS. Not only do we have Swinton and Fiore’s everlasting bromance blessing the pages once again, but with the addition of new characters, Scheuerer was able to provide us with a bucketload of interesting relationships. And don’t even get me started on all the girl power. Listen. If books with kickass ladies are your thing, Reign of Mist is filled to the brim with it.
Honestly, there isn’t much else I can say and gush about without getting too spoiler-y so I’ll end my review with this: if you wanna read about an enthralling world full of badass women, shocking revelations, morally grey characters, solid character arcs, LGBT+ rep, and relationships that’ll have you screaming, “YAAAAS I WOULD DIE FOR THEM,” then look no further than the Oremere Chronicles. This series has it all.
And now, for some of my favorite quotes:
“We’re not all born equal in strength and agility, but a mind can be as sharp as any blade, if you know how to wield it.”
“Thus is the nature of life, is it not? Love and loss so intricately entwined. You cannot have one without the other, unfortunately.”
“Not all wars were fought with blades and shields. Not all courage was found in the heart of battle.”
