Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble! This week’s topic is all about witches. Whether they’re the classic ugly-hag-who-lives-in-the-woods-with-a-black-cat type or more of a Hermione Granger, witches remain to be one of my favorite beings in literature!
The Witches by Roald Dahl
What could be witchier than a book named “The Witches?” This is one of my favorite childhood books so I had to include it. It’s imaginative, charming, and filled with horrific, heartless witches with faces that probably would’ve given you nightmares as a child.
Fablehaven by Brandon Mull
I totally forgot about this series while I was trying to come up with my list. It wasn’t until I was writing my intro that I remembered Muriel Taggert hahaha! Muriel had me intrigued from the minute she was introduced. She’s a bit stereotypical and old fashioned as a witch but that’s part of why I love her.
Truthwitch by Susan Dennard
Another one with the word “witch” in the title! And the first non-terrifying witch on the list! Fast-paced brain candy is the best way to describe Truthwitch, I think. It doesn’t always work. Buuuuuut this book is charming on its own and the characters are a delight to read about.
The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo
Okay, this one’s a bit of a cheat because I haven’t read the actual book yet. But one of the stories included is The Witch of Duva, which I have read and loved. The Witch of Duva is a Hansel and Gretel-esque folk tale set in the Grishaverse. Short, satisfying and, as witch stories should be, pleasantly creepy.
Uprooted by Naomi Novik
This might be the third time I’ve mentioned Uprooted in a T5W. And it probably won’t be the last. I adore this book with every fibre of my being and will gladly gush about it over and over again until I die. The protagonist of Uprooted is a witch, and there are mentions of a Baba Yaga-like figure throughout the story. Very reminiscent of old fairytales.
Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam (Thoughts on Tomes) and created by Lainey (gingerreadslainey) on Goodreads. Interested? Join in the fun!
Truthwitch has been sitting on my shelves since it first came out and I still haven’t read it! Need to get on that.
My Top 5 Wednesday.
